Welcome to New York City's Upper East Side where my friends and I live, and go to school, and play, and sleep- sometimes with each other. We all live in huge apartments with our own bedrooms and bathrooms and phone lines. We're smart, we've inherited classic good looks, we have fantastic clothes, and we know how to party.

so begins the plot summary of the addictive and brilliant gossipgirl books by cecily von ziegesar. there are hundreds of communties devoted to discussing and roleplaying the books--but do you ever feel like you've landed in the middle of the real thing? and face it, gossip about people you go to school with and see every day can't help but be more interesting than gossip about fictional characters. so a few of us who shall remain unnamed here decided that middlesex needed its own version of gossipgirl.net. admit it--even if you haven't read the books--you want to join in.

rules for joining

as gossip girl herself says, all names have been changed, abbreviated or shortened to protect the innocent--namely me! although we may not be quite so innocent, if anyone finds out this exists, we're in trouble. which of course adds to the fun. however, as we have a certain amount of desire to remain at middlesex and not be publicly denounced, this site is not a community but rather a journal. all posts will use full names, but be friends only. posts will solely be devoted to hot new gossip, so friends added will be carefully screened. we will not add you if you do not add us first. however, as we want others to share their gossip anonymously, the first entry will contain the password to the journal. added friends may therefore log in to read posts and post their own gossip without giving away their identity, and no one person can be held responsible for the content. as far as adding friends, we will obviously only add people we know and trust, but promise not to be selective. however, we reserve the right to remove you if you break any of the below rules.

rules for posting

first and foremost, don't post if it's not interesting. if you're sure everyone has heard it, don't bring it up. secondly, this community is not so much to express shock and disgust as simply pass on facts. if you think she's just such a slut and he's totally a pedophile, tell all your friends but don't rant about it here. after all, real quality tabloids don't criticize celebrities, do they? they simply publish the sunbathing photos and allow readers to make their own judgements. and besides, you shouldn't have to point out how scandalous your news is---if isn't, why would you be posting it here? thirdly, high school has enough social drama as it is. don't post ANYTHING that in anyway involves anyone who lists this journal as a friend, and try to avoid mentioning their friends too. we're all in the same general social group and can hear a first account, and there's just too much potential drama that no one really wants. and last of all, EVERYTHING MUST MUST MUST BE FRIENDS ONLY.

commenting is absolutely welcome. however, part of the not-so-harmless fun is in the anonymity, so why not just post? we do log ip addresses and screen comments.

rules for spreading the love

naturally, the entire point of a journal devoted to gossip is to pass it on. however, we don't want those outside of our inner circle knowing of this journal, as it can only lead to trouble. obviously not everyone has a livejournal account, but if you doubt someone would be added as a friend here, don't tell them where you heard the news. also, if we find out that you've given out the password or shown others this journal without permission, you will be promptly defriended and the password will be changed. of course, if you ask, we'll probably be happy to let your friend(s) view the entries.
